Warranty FAQ
Q. What costs are my responsibility during the warranty period?
A. The customer’s responsibility includes all costs of normal maintenance services, non-warranty repairs, accident and collision damage, and oil, oil filters, air filters, spark plugs, and brake shoes or pads.
Q. What are some examples of “abnormal” strain, neglect, or abuse?
A. These terms are general and overlap each other in areas. Specific examples include: Running the machine without oil; operating the machine with a broken or damaged part which causes another part to fail, damage or failure due to improper or careless transportation and or tie down; and so on. If you have any specific questions on operation or maintenance, please contact your dealer for advice.
Q. Does the warranty cover incidental costs such as towing or transportation due to a failure?
A. No. The warranty is limited to parts to repair the machine itself.
Q. May I perform any or all of the recommended maintenance shown in the Owner’s Service Manual instead of having the dealer do them?
A. Yes, if you are a qualified mechanic and follow the procedures specified in the Owner’s Service Manual.
Q. Will the warranty be void or canceled if I do not operate or maintain my new Motoped® as specified in the Owner’s Service Manual?
A. No. The warranty on a new Motoped® cannot be “voided” or “cancelled.” However, if a particular failure is caused by operation or maintenance other than as shown in the Owner’s Service Manual, that failure may not be covered under warranty.
Q. What responsibility does Sturgis Motocruzin have under the warranty?
A. Sturgis Motocruzin is expected to:
1. Completely set up every new machine before sale. 2. Explain the operation, maintenance, and warranty requirements to your satisfaction at the time of sale, and upon your request at any later date. 3. Provide parts to cure any problems as described in the warranty and provide technical support for the installation of the part.
Q. Does the warranty on the engine include the carburetor, air filter, air box, and exhaust pipe?
A. Yes

IS IT LEGAL TO RIDE ON THE STREET? 2016-08-02T20:20:49+00:00
  • Laws for motorized bicycles vary by state and country. We recommend checking with your local DMV before purchasing and operating your Motoped.

HOW DOES IT WORK? 2016-08-02T20:20:33+00:00
  • When the motor is on, the rider can either choose to pedal or motor. Whatever is sending the most power to the jackshaft (pedal or motor) will turn the rear wheel. The rider can assist the motor by pedaling at lower speeds if needed.

CAN I ORDER MY MOTOPED WITH FOOT PEGS? 2016-08-02T20:19:59+00:00
  • All Motopeds come stock with pedals which make them a motorized bicycle, but you can add the foot peg kit as an accessory option from our web store.

KICK START LEVERS 2016-08-02T20:19:40+00:00
  • Not all kick start levers will work. The lever needs to be a curved folding style lever. The lever must be curved and folding style so that when the lever is kicked downward it clears the free-wheel and chain that is directly below it. The kick starter spline size depends on the motor as there are different sizes. Consult your motor manufacturer or supplier for specific kick starter spline sizes. If you have purchased a MOTOPED® kit we do not supply the kick start lever.

MOTORS 2016-08-02T20:19:22+00:00
  • If you intend to install your own engine in a MOTOPED® kit, most horizontal E-22 (Honda style) engines up to 155cc will fit the MOTOPED® frame bolt pattern. Please note, all engines must comply with state and federal guidelines. Engines must comply with EPA & ARB certification where applicable. International market check your local government agency.

  • MOTOPED® will soon have multiple engine displacement options as EPA / ARB certifications are completed

  • Each MOTOPED® base model begins with a 49cc 2-Stage internal fully automatic engine. This gives the rider the most options for compliant operation.

  • Each MOTOPED® base model begins with a kit without an engine OR a 49cc two-stage internal fully automatic engine. The 49cc power configuration allows the bike to be operated as a “motorized bicycle” in many states and countries.

  • Each state, country and territory publishes specific laws that define a “motorized bicycle” describing where and how the bike can be operated. In addition, it’s important to be aware of environmental laws (EPA, ARB) that relate to engine certifications that may impact the legal operation and sale of the bike.

  • We advise you to research these laws and regulations to ensure the proper operation and purchase of your MOTOPED®.

WILL KAWASAKI MOTORS WORK? 2016-08-02T20:18:55+00:00
  • No, the Kawasaki motors have a different engine mount bolt hole pattern than the E-22 style motors. There are motors called YX motors which have a Kawi top end and an E-22 style bottom end, like the Pitster 155z, they will work. All engines must comply with state and federal guidelines. Engines must comply with EPA/CARB certification where applicable. Markets outside of U.S. check your local government agency.

SPROCKET SIZES 2016-08-02T20:16:37+00:00
  • The MOTOPED® comes with 6 separate sprockets; Jackshaft: left side is 26 tooth, right side is 23 tooth, rear hub 34 tooth, chain wheel 34 tooth, free wheel 14 tooth, countershaft drive sprocket 13 tooth. The sprocket sizes may vary depending on the model. Please consult with a MOTOPED® technician for more details.

COUNTERSHAFT SPROCKET SIZE 2016-08-02T20:16:10+00:00
  • If you use your own motors, please note that most motors come with a 14 tooth sprocket, but it is recommended to replace it with a 13 tooth to eliminate the potential need for the use of a half link. Half links are not as strong and can snap under high pressure.

WHAT IS A HALF LINK? 2018-02-13T22:38:16+00:00
  • Bike chains consist of alternately one link with outside plates and one link with inside plates. The only way a chain will join up is outside plates to inside plates. This means that chain lengths are normally only adjustable by two full link lengths. The purpose of a half link is for incremental chain adjustments by only one link which allows for more flexibility in chain length.

  • The use of a half link on the 420 motorcycle chains are not recommended with larger displacement engines as half links have been known to snap under higher stress applications. If you are going to run a large displacement motor (110cc or higher), we suggest a countershaft sprocket change rather than using a half link.

  • Enter the half link. Half links make it possible to adjust the chain length by only one link. If your MOTOPED® has limited room to adjust the chain tension a half link may prove helpful when adjusting the chain tension by moving the rear wheel.
